Events are being held around the country to mark the first anniversary of the tragedy

The lives of Grenfell Tower

At 6pm on Wednesday, Father Alan Everett stood at the front of St Clement’s church, close to Grenfell Tower, in London, to say the Lord’s prayer. His words were softly echoed by a dozen or so people, nearly all women, who had come to mark the beginning of a 24-hour vigil for victims of the disaster a year ago.

Following the prayer, Everett took a seat in the back row of the church for some moments of silent contemplation. Others lit remembrance candles, wedging them in sand-filled containers on the floor. There were no voices, no music, only the distant sound of crying baby.
