NAB 2018: Blackmagic teases new Pocket 4K cinema camera

NAB 2018: Blackmagic teases new Pocket 4K cinema camera</h1>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img alt="Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K news update" height="225" src="http://www.starkinsider.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/Blackmagic-Pocket-Cinema-Camera-4K-news-update-640x360.jpg?x28372" width="400" /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #222222; font-family: "Droid Serif"; font-size: 16px; line-height: 25px; margin-bottom: 24px; text-align: start;">
Our cinematic dreams are coming true.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #222222; font-family: "Droid Serif"; font-size: 16px; line-height: 25px; margin-bottom: 24px; text-align: start;">
Photos out of Las Vegas today show a huge billboard teasing a new Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K. If true, this could be big news.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #222222; font-family: "Droid Serif"; font-size: 16px; line-height: 25px; margin-bottom: 24px; text-align: start;">
The original Pocket camera became a darling among budget videographers and filmmakers. Small form factor, option for RAW file capture, built-in LCD screen, and outstanding — dare we call it “filmic”? — image turned the Pocket into a sensational hit for Blackmagic. At only $995 (USD) it was utterly amazing value for the money. That many still use it today is testament to its forward-thinking specs and design.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #222222; font-family: "Droid Serif"; font-size: 16px; line-height: 25px; margin-bottom: 24px; text-align: start;">
But… one thing was missing:</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #222222; font-family: "Droid Serif"; font-size: 16px; line-height: 25px; margin-bottom: 24px; text-align: start;">
Given that’s it 2018 and the 4K train has departed, the faithful had long hoped Australia’s Blackmagic Design team would give the little camera attention and release a sequel with updated specs. That day is near. On its Facebook page, <a href="https://www.facebook.com/BlackmagicDesignOfficial/" style="background: transparent; box-sizing: border-box; color: #d17525; text-decoration-line: none !important;">BMD says it will hold a press conference on Monday, April 9, 2018 at 9:30am PDT</a>where surely all the details will flow.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #222222; font-family: "Droid Serif"; font-size: 16px; line-height: 25px; margin-bottom: 24px; text-align: start;">
Here’s hoping that in addition to 4K the engineers have found a way to give the Pocket better battery life and a more legible display in bright light. Yes, isn’t that always the way? More, more, more. Either way, along <a href="http://www.starkinsider.com/2018/04/videography-news-apple-introduces-new-prores-raw-codec-for-image-capture-editing.html" style="background: transparent; box-sizing: border-box; color: #d17525; text-decoration-line: none !important;">with Apple’s ProRes RAW announcement</a>, this NAB is turning out to be a solid one for camera and video nerds.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #222222; font-family: "Droid Serif"; font-size: 16px; line-height: 25px; margin-bottom: 24px; text-align: center;">
<img alt="Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K teaser poster spotted in Las Vegas in advance of the NAB trade show." height="400" src="http://www.starkinsider.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/NAB-Blackmagic-Cinema-Camera-4K-poster-marketing-teaser-700x933.jpg?x28372" width="300" /></div>

<figure class="wp-caption alignnone td-post-image-full" id="attachment_190474" style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #444444; font-family: "Droid Serif"; font-size: 16px; left: -21px; margin: 0px; max-width: none !important; position: relative; width: 640px; z-index: 1;"><figcaption class="wp-caption-text" style="box-sizing: border-box; font-family: "Open Sans"; font-size: 12px; font-style: italic; line-height: 18px; margin: 4px 0px 17px; padding-left: 20px; padding-right: 20px; text-align: right; z-index: 1;">Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K teaser poster spotted in Las Vegas in advance of the NAB trade show.</figcaption></figure><br />
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #222222; font-family: "Droid Serif"; font-size: 16px; line-height: 25px; margin-bottom: 24px; text-align: start;">
I used the Blackmagic Micro Cinema Camera on several projects <strong style="box-sizing: border-box;"><a href="http://www.youtube.com/starkinsider/" style="background: transparent; box-sizing: border-box; color: #d17525; text-decoration-line: none !important;">for Stark Insider</a></strong>over the past few years. It’s an interesting camera; sort of like the Pocket, but without the built-in screen. Recording to cheap SD cards and with a beautiful sensor it produced outstanding results — even if ergonomically is was far from  something like a GH5 or plan old DSLR camera body.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #222222; font-family: "Droid Serif"; font-size: 16px; line-height: 25px; margin-bottom: 24px; text-align: start;">
Many of the scenes at the “Magical Retreat” just north of San Francisco, under majestic redwoods, from our SI short <em style="box-sizing: border-box;">3 Days in Sonoma</em> were shot with the Micro. I especially like that its Super 16-sized sensor made it a match made in heaven for the famed vintage Angenieux 12-120mm lens. A modern day equivalent might cost around $75,000. In other words: prohibitive. But I picked one up for about $600 on eBay. Though it’s from the 1960s the optics are very pretty to my eyes. And I can crank away thanks to a handle. So I can get — or try to get — De Palma style superzooms. And that’s what I tried to do for a few of the scripted bits in <em style="box-sizing: border-box;">3 Days in Sonoma</em>.</div>
<h2 style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #222222; font-family: "Open Sans"; font-size: 27px; font-weight: 400; line-height: 38px; margin: 30px 0px 20px; text-align: start;">
<strong style="box-sizing: border-box;">3 Days in Sonoma</strong></h2>

ll that to say, it will be very interesting to see what Blackmagic does with the Pocket 4K. The original Pocket was  already a legend amongst the filmmaking community and bloggers, so here’s hoping the company shakes up the industry once again!</div>

<div class="body-text__paragraph-text font--body has-spacing" style="background-color: white; box-sizing: inherit; color: #333333; font-family: Montserrat, Arial, "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; margin-top: 30px; padding: 0px; text-align: start;">
"The Milky Way is pretty big already," study lead author Cristina Martínez-Lombilla, a doctoral candidate at the Astrophysics Institute of the Canary Islands, which is based on the island of Tenerife, <a href="https://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2018-04/ras-itm032918.php" style="box-sizing: inherit; color: #16bcef; cursor: pointer; font-size: 14px; font-stretch: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; line-height: 26px; outline: none; text-decoration-line: none; transition-duration: 0.1s; transition-property: color; transition-timing-function: ease-in-out;">said in a statement</a>.</div>
<div class="body-text__paragraph-text font--body has-spacing" style="background-color: white; box-sizing: inherit; color: #333333; font-family: Montserrat, Arial, "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; margin-top: 30px; padding: 0px; text-align: start;">
"But our work shows that at least the visible part of it is slowly increasing in size, as stars form on the galactic outskirts," Martínez-Lombilla added. "It won't be quick, but if you could travel forward in time and look at the galaxy in 3 billion years' time, it would be about 5 percent bigger than [it is] today." [<a href="https://www.space.com/14249-milkyway-galaxy-photos.html" style="box-sizing: inherit; color: #16bcef; cursor: pointer; font-size: 14px; font-stretch: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; line-height: 26px; outline: none; text-decoration-line: none; transition-duration: 0.1s; transition-property: color; transition-timing-function: ease-in-out;">Stunning Photos of Our Milky Way Galaxy (Gallery)</a>]</div>

The Milky Way is a spiral galaxy about 100,000 light-years wide that harbors several hundred billion stars. (Scientists aren't sure of the exact number.) It's tough to gauge the galaxy's growth directly because we're in the middle of it. So Martínez-Lombilla and her team looked to other spiral galaxies as a guide.</div>
<div class="body-text__paragraph-text font--body has-spacing" style="background-color: white; box-sizing: inherit; color: #333333; font-family: Montserrat, Arial, "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; margin-top: 30px; padding: 0px; text-align: start;">
The researchers analyzed the outer reaches of a number of spiral galaxies, using optical-light data gathered by the ground-based Sloan Digital Sky Survey and near-ultraviolet and near-infrared information collected by NASA's Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) and Spitzer space telescopes, respectively. (Both GALEX and Spitzer launched in 2003. GALEX was decommissioned in 2013, but Spitzer remains operational today.)</div>
<div class="body-text__paragraph-text font--body has-spacing" style="background-color: white; box-sizing: inherit; color: #333333; font-family: Montserrat, Arial, "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; margin-top: 30px; padding: 0px; text-align: start;">
The star birth and movement the team observed indicate that galaxies like the Milky Way are expanding at about 1,100 mph (1,770 km/h) — 1.4 times the speed of sound at sea level here on Earth.</div>
<div class="body-text__paragraph-text font--body has-spacing" style="background-color: white; box-sizing: inherit; color: #333333; font-family: Montserrat, Arial, "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; margin-top: 30px; padding: 0px; text-align: start;">
In the Milky Way's case, this relatively gradual growth will be swamped in about 4 billion years by a dramatic event: a <a href="https://www.space.com/15944-milkyway-galaxy-crash-andromeda-artist-pictures.html" style="box-sizing: inherit; color: #16bcef; cursor: pointer; font-size: 14px; font-stretch: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; line-height: 26px; outline: none; text-decoration-line: none; transition-duration: 0.1s; transition-property: color; transition-timing-function: ease-in-out;">collision with the spiral galaxy Andromeda</a>. The two spirals will merge to form the "Milkdromeda" mega-galaxy, astronomers say.</div>

Martínez-Lombilla presented the new results April 4 at the European Week of Astronomy and Space Science conference in Liverpool, England.</div>

<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #111516; font-family: Georgia, Times, serif; font-size: 19px; margin-bottom: 1em; text-align: left;">
Facebook is tightening the noose on advertisers and changing how it manages pages and ads on its social network and Instagram.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #111516; font-family: Georgia, Times, serif; font-size: 19px; margin-bottom: 1em; text-align: left;">
The company said on Friday that it would require both political ads and pages with "large numbers of followers" to be authorized.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #111516; font-family: Georgia, Times, serif; font-size: 19px; margin-bottom: 1em; text-align: left;">
The new requirements are aimed at increasing transparency and accountability, giving users more information to evaluate trustworthiness, and preventing election interference, Rob Goldman, Facebook's vice president of ads, and Alex Himel, its vice president of local and pages, <a href="https://newsroom.fb.com/news/2018/04/transparent-ads-and-pages/" style="background-color: transparent; box-sizing: border-box; color: #196d8d; text-decoration-line: none;">said in a blog post on the company's site</a>.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #111516; font-family: Georgia, Times, serif; font-size: 19px; margin-bottom: 1em; text-align: left;">
"We know we were slow to pick up foreign interference in the 2016 US elections," Goldman and Himel wrote. "By increasing transparency around ads and pages on Facebook, we can increase accountability for advertisers — improving our service for everyone."</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #111516; font-family: Georgia, Times, serif; font-size: 19px; margin-bottom: 1em; text-align: left;">
Advertisers will need to confirm their identity and location to get authorization to run issue-based ads, such as those centered on current political topics or debates. Facebook will ban those that don't clear the process from running such ads on either its social network or Instagram. Each message from an approved advertiser will be labeled as a "political ad" and show who paid for it.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #111516; font-family: Georgia, Times, serif; font-size: 19px; margin-bottom: 1em; text-align: left;">
Anyone who manages a Facebook page with a substantial number of followers will also need to be verified, and page owners who do not clear the process won't be able to publish posts on them.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #111516; font-family: Georgia, Times, serif; font-size: 19px; margin-bottom: 1em; text-align: left;">
The requirement is designed to clamp down on users with fake accounts running Facebook pages. Going forward, Facebook says, visitors will also be able to see more information about the page, such as name changes.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #111516; font-family: Georgia, Times, serif; font-size: 19px; margin-bottom: 1em; text-align: left;">
The move to authorize issue-based ads comes on top of the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/like-twitter-facebook-will-require-full-transparency-for-political-advertisers-and-other-businesses-too-2017-10" style="background-color: transparent; box-sizing: border-box; color: #196d8d; text-decoration-line: none;">changes Facebook rolled out in October</a>, when it said advertisers running federal-election-related ads in the US would be required to verify their identities and include disclosures.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #111516; font-family: Georgia, Times, serif; font-size: 19px; margin-bottom: 1em; text-align: left;">
Facebook also said it was working with third parties to develop a list of key issues that it would refine over time.</div>
<h2 style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #111516; font-family: FaktConPro-SemiBold, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 31.5px; font-weight: 500; line-height: 1.3em; margin: 10px 0px; text-align: left;">
The latest in a series of changes by Facebook to get control of ads and pages</h2>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #111516; font-family: Georgia, Times, serif; font-size: 19px; margin-bottom: 1em; text-align: left;">
Facebook's other steps to prevent abuse of its services include a feature called "view ads" that lets users see all the ads a Facebook page is running, even those that may not be targeted to them. The company is testing it in Canada and plans to launch it globally this summer.</div>
<div class="ad ad-wrapper postload in-post" data-adunit="desktop/tech/advertising/post" data-authors="tanya-dua" data-bi-ad="" data-force="" data-google-query-id="CJGiqqC3ptoCFQGMdwodI-AF6Q" data-pagetype="post" data-pos="atf" data-region="Desktop In Post Ad" data-responsive="[{"browserLimit":[0,0],"slotSize":[[300,250],"fluid"]},{"browserLimit":[600,0],"slotSize":[[300,250],"fluid"]},{"browserLimit":[1260,0],"slotSize":[[728,90],"fluid"]},{"location":"inline"}]" data-tag="facebook,cambridge-analytica,privacy" data-type="ad" data-url="facebook-now-requires-political-ads-and-certain-pages-to-be-authorized-2018-4" data-views="" id="ad-735086" style="background-color: white; border-bottom: 1px solid rgb(226, 226, 226); border-top: 1px solid rgb(226, 226, 226); box-sizing: border-box; font-family: Georgia, Times, serif; font-size: 19px; margin: 30px 0px; min-height: 60px; overflow: hidden; padding: 30px 0px;">
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #111516; margin-bottom: 1em; text-align: left;">
The company also is planning to release in June a searchable archive of all past political ads that would show not just their images and text, but the amount spent on them and the demographic information used to target them to Facebook users.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #111516; margin-bottom: 1em; text-align: left;">
With elections in the US, India, Brazil, Mexico, Pakistan, Hungary, and other countries this year, preventing election interference is a huge focus for Facebook right now, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/mark-zuckerberg-april-2018-conference-call-on-facebook-privacy-full-transcript-2018-4" style="background-color: transparent; box-sizing: border-box; color: #196d8d; text-decoration-line: none;">CEO Mark Zuckerberg said recently</a>.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #111516; margin-bottom: 1em; text-align: left;">
It's one of his top priorities for 2018, Facebook will hire more people to assist with the effort, Zuckerberg said in <a href="https://www.facebook.com/zuck/posts/10104784125525891" style="background-color: transparent; box-sizing: border-box; color: #196d8d; text-decoration-line: none;">a post on his Facebook account</a> on Friday.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #111516; margin-bottom: 1em; text-align: left;">
Zuckerberg also voiced his support for the Honest Ads Act, a bill that would apply disclosure requirements for ads on TV or in print to political ads on online services.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #111516; margin-bottom: 1em; text-align: left;">
He said he hoped the moves would help raise the bar for all political advertising online.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #111516; margin-bottom: 1em; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #111516; margin-bottom: 1em; text-align: left;">
"These steps by themselves won't stop all people trying to game the system," Zuckerberg wrote. "But they will make it a lot harder for anyone to do what the Russians did during the 2016 election and use fake accounts and pages to run ads."</div>

In between the gigantic sales Steam runs, there's deals every week offering big discounts of different games. But this week is a little different as the discount being offer on Crusader Kings II is 100 percent. That's right, the game is <a href="http://store.steampowered.com/news/38914/" style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #e20309; line-height: inherit; text-decoration-line: none;" target="_blank">completely free</a> and yours to keep forever.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; font-family: Roboto, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18.72px; letter-spacing: 0.9px; line-height: 2rem; margin-bottom: 0.938rem; padding: 0px; text-align: start; text-rendering: optimizeLegibility;">
First released in 2012, the strategy game was developed by Paradox Development Studio and published by Paradox Interactive. It's set in the Middle Ages and puts the player in control of a dynasty with the aim of making it a success. If you like a game full of diplomacy and power struggles, Crusader Kings II is for you.</div>
<div class="row pcm-content" style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; float: left; font-family: Roboto, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18.72px; letter-spacing: 0.9px; margin: 0px; max-width: none; padding: 0px; position: relative; width: auto;">

The fact it averaged a score of <a href="http://www.metacritic.com/game/pc/crusader-kings-ii" style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #e20309; line-height: inherit; text-decoration-line: none;" target="_blank">82 on Metacritic</a> and sold over a million copies means you're getting a great game (if you like this genre) for free.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; font-family: Roboto, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18.72px; letter-spacing: 0.9px; line-height: 2rem; margin-bottom: 0.938rem; padding: 0px; text-align: start; text-rendering: optimizeLegibility;">

<span style="background-color: white; font-family: Roboto, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18.72px; letter-spacing: 0.9px; text-align: start;">Steam will add the game to your account without charge until 10am Pacific on Saturday. After that, and until 10am Pacific on Monday, the game will be offered at a 75 percent discount.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; font-family: Roboto, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18.72px; letter-spacing: 0.9px; line-height: 2rem; margin-bottom: 0.938rem; padding: 0px; text-rendering: optimizeLegibility;">
Two bundles are also being offered with heavy discounts which include some or all of the DLC packs for the game. The first is the <a href="http://store.steampowered.com/bundle/5177/Crusader_Kings_II_Dynasty_Starter_Pack/" style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #e20309; line-height: inherit; text-decoration-line: none;" target="_blank">Crusader Kings II: Dynasty Starter Pack</a> for $28.29 (66 percent discount) which includes one DLC pack and four expansions. The second is the <a href="http://store.steampowered.com/bundle/6208/Crusader_Kings_II_Love_Bundle/" style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #e20309; line-height: inherit; text-decoration-line: none;" target="_blank">Crusader Kings II: Love Bundle</a> for $84.50 (58 percent discount) which includes 14 expansion packs!</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; font-family: Roboto, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18.72px; letter-spacing: 0.9px; line-height: 2rem; margin-bottom: 0.938rem; padding: 0px; text-rendering: optimizeLegibility;">
If I were Paradox, I'd ask Steam to extend the DLC discounts for the whole of next week. Many gamers will pick up the free copy of the game, but only consider buying the DLC once they've spent a few hours playing. It's then much more likely they'll take advantage of those discounted prices to grab all the content.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; font-family: Roboto, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18.72px; letter-spacing: 0.9px; line-height: 2rem; margin-bottom: 0.938rem; padding: 0px; text-rendering: optimizeLegibility;">

as Google continues to attempt to <a href="https://www.xda-developers.com/google-chrome-testing-horizontal-tab-switcher/" style="background-color: transparent; box-sizing: border-box; color: #fc8d8d; text-decoration-line: none; transition: 0.2s;">improve it’s UX in Google Chrome</a>, they’ve been trying in <a href="https://www.xda-developers.com/google-chrome-home-button-android-return/" style="background-color: transparent; box-sizing: border-box; color: #fc8d8d; text-decoration-line: none; transition: 0.2s;">other ways to improve their browser</a> too. According to the <a href="https://chromium-review.googlesource.com/c/chromium/src/+/996238/1" style="background-color: transparent; box-sizing: border-box; color: #fc8d8d; text-decoration-line: none; transition: 0.2s;">Chromium Gerrit</a>, an addition is in the works that will allow you to long-press your device’s back button to view your recent navigational history. The feature will be enabled via a Chrome flag and will only be available on mobile devices.</div>
<div style="background-color: #fdfdfd; box-sizing: border-box; color: #666666; font-family: "Titillium Web", sans-serif; font-size: 17px; margin-bottom: 20px; text-align: start;">
The flag description simply states that the feature is comprised of a “long press [of] the back button to display navigation history.” We’re unsure how exactly the navigation history will be displayed on-screen, but it could be possible to see the new <a href="https://www.xda-developers.com/hands-on-google-chromes-new-duplex-split-toolbar-ui-replaces-chrome-home/" style="background-color: transparent; box-sizing: border-box; color: #fc8d8d; text-decoration-line: none; transition: 0.2s;">Chrome Duplex</a> being used to display it. Either way, it’s an attempt by Google to improve their browser and provide even more ways for users to view potentially important information easily. Currently, it’s not difficult to view your navigational history anyways, but there’s nothing wrong with making it even easier.</div>
<div style="background-color: #fdfdfd; box-sizing: border-box; color: #666666; font-family: "Titillium Web", sans-serif; font-size: 17px; margin-bottom: 20px; text-align: start;">
The feature is reminiscent of Google Chrome on Desktop’s ability to view your navigation history by right-clicking the back arrow in the top left. The style this menu follows could also suggest the style in which we will see our navigational history. As a result, it may not be through the use of the new Google Duplex, but through a menu which comes from the top right or top left of the screen. Firefox for Android and Samsung Internet also have such a feature, so it’s not too surprising to see Google incorporate it into Chrome to achieve feature parity.</div>
<div style="background-color: #fdfdfd; box-sizing: border-box; color: #666666; font-family: "Titillium Web", sans-serif; font-size: 17px; margin-bottom: 20px; text-align: start;">
This isn’t the only change we’ve spotted recently, with <a href="https://www.xda-developers.com/google-chrome-android-gesture-drag-drop-links/" style="background-color: transparent; box-sizing: border-box; color: #fc8d8d; text-decoration-line: none; transition: 0.2s;">another commit</a> suggesting that soon we may see link dragging and dropping via a gesture. If the testing goes successfully, we will likely see this feature make in the Canary version of Google Chrome in the next month or two. You’ll be able to download it via the Google Play Store and give it a try. If you’re interested in any other new features of Google Chrome, you can download the Canary version below.</div>

<div dir="ltr" style="box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 1.125rem; line-height: 1.9rem; margin-bottom: 1.3rem; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">
Ubisoft recently confirmed plans for a second year of content for <a data-ref-id="5000-438539" href="https://www.gamespot.com/tom-clancys-ghost-recon-wildlands/" style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #e03800; outline: 0px; text-decoration-line: none;">Ghost Recon Wildlands</a>. Now, we have an idea of an exciting addition that may be coming in one of those future updates: some kind of appearance by Splinter Cell's Sam Fisher.</div>
<div dir="ltr" style="box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 1.125rem; line-height: 1.9rem; margin-bottom: 1.3rem; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">
A new teaser trailer has been released that features Fisher speaking about heading to Bolivia, the setting of Wildlands. It also references his relationship with the game's Ghosts, the squad of playable characters. We don't actually hear Fisher's name used, but the silhouette--and accompanying night-vision goggles--leave little doubt about who we're looking at.</div>
<div dir="ltr" style="box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 1.125rem; line-height: 1.9rem; margin-bottom: 1.3rem; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">
Notably, the voice seems to be that of Michael Ironside, the longtime voice actor for Fisher. Ironside was absent from the most recent game, <a data-ref-id="5000-90674" href="https://www.gamespot.com/tom-clancys-splinter-cell-blacklist/" style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #e03800; outline: 0px; text-decoration-line: none;">Splinter Cell: Blacklist</a>, with Eric Johnson taking over the role. What this means, if anything, for future Splinter Cell games is unclear.</div>

The teaser video concludes by saying more information will be shared on Monday, April 9, so we don't have long to wait to find out exactly what Fisher's role in Wildlands will be. We know a <a data-ref-id="1100-6457887" href="https://www.gamespot.com/articles/ghost-recon-wildlands-to-get-year-2-of-free-update/1100-6457887/" style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #e03800; outline: 0px; text-decoration-line: none;">new update</a> is coming to the game on April 10, but only its additions to Ghost War have been detailed. Each of the four major updates for Wildlands in Year 2 will carry some kind of theme, and perhaps this one will be centered around Splinter Cell. Ubisoft previously offered a Wildlands crossover event with the limited-time <a data-ref-id="1100-6455654" href="https://www.gamespot.com/articles/free-ghost-recon-wildlands-predator-themed-jungle-/1100-6455654/" style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #e03800; outline: 0px; text-decoration-line: none;">Predator update</a>.</div>

Western Digital is challenging Samsung at the high-end of the NVMe solid state drive spectrum with a new line of performance drives at comparatively attractive price points. We haven't tested these new SSDs yet, but if they live up to WD's speed ratings, they could prove popular alternatives to Samsung's blazing fast <a data-component="Inline links" data-count="9" data-index="1" data-track-type="click" href="https://www.pcgamer.com/samsungs-blazing-fast-960-pro-and-960-evo-nvme-ssds-deliver-on-capacity-too/" style="border: 0px; color: #c51618; font-family: inherit; font-stretch: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; font-weight: inherit; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration-line: none; vertical-align: baseline;">960 Pro family</a>.</div>

The new drives ship in the M.2 2280 form factor, which as shown above are those gumstick-sized SSDs that plug directly into your motherboard without any SATA or power cables. And being NVMe drives, they shuttle data through the PCIe bus, allowing for much faster speeds compared to SATA.</div>

While we haven't tested these ourselves, the rated numbers compare favorably to Samsung's 960 Pro line, which is rated to deliver sequential read and write performance of up to 3,500MB/s and 2,100MB/s, respectively. According to <a class="hawk-link-parsed" data-component="Inline links" data-count="9" data-index="2" data-track-type="click" href="https://www.pcworld.com/article/3265032/storage/western-digital-black-3d-nvme-ssd-review.html" style="border: 0px; color: #c51618; font-family: inherit; font-stretch: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; font-weight: inherit; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration-line: none; vertical-align: baseline;">PCWorld's testing</a>, they're pretty evenly matched in most instances, save for WD's drives falling short on a couple of tests.</div>

WD is making a hard push at gamers with this new line, at least in its <a class="hawk-link-parsed" data-component="Inline links" data-count="9" data-dimension105="10847" data-dimension14="wdc.com" data-hl-processed="hawklinks" data-href-on-the-fly="https://www.anrdoezrs.net/links/7706533/type/dlg/sid/pcg-custom-tracking/https://www.wdc.com/about-wd/newsroom/press-room/2018-04-05-western-digital-ups-the-game-with-powerful-new-gaming-ssd-with-nvme-performance.html" data-index="3" data-label="press release" data-track-type="click" href="https://www.wdc.com/about-wd/newsroom/press-room/2018-04-05-western-digital-ups-the-game-with-powerful-new-gaming-ssd-with-nvme-performance.html" rel="nofollow" style="border: 0px; color: #c51618; font-family: inherit; font-stretch: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; font-weight: inherit; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration-line: none; vertical-align: baseline;" target="_blank">press release</a>.</div>

"Today’s gaming applications require increasing capability from their PCs, and this will only continue to advance. With our new architecture and controller, the Western Digital Black SSD integrates our 3D NAND technology with the NVMe interface to enable new levels of performance. Whether it’s a new gaming rig or a video-editing workstation, our innovative NVMe drives will power many existing and future environments that enable data to thrive," said Mark Grace, senior vice president, Devices Business Unit, Western Digital.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #333333; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-east-asian: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; line-height: 1.5; margin-bottom: 1em; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; width: 602px;">
The thing about SSDs and gaming, though, is that you're not likely to see a difference in performance between a SATA-based SSD and a much faster NVMe SSD. This also applies to general system performance. Where these drives make a bigger difference is when moving a lot of files around, and doing so frequently.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #333333; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-east-asian: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; line-height: 1.5; margin-bottom: 1em; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; width: 602px;">

For centuries, the prevailing science has indicated that all of the nitrogen on Earth available to plants comes from the atmosphere. But a study from the University of California, Davis, indicates that more than a quarter comes from Earth's bedrock.</div>
<div id="text" style="background-color: white; border-radius: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box; font-style: normal;">
<div style="border-radius: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 10px;">
The study, to be published April 6 in the journal <em style="border-radius: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box;">Science</em>, found that up to 26 percent of the nitrogen in natural ecosystems is sourced from rocks, with the remaining fraction from the atmosphere.</div>
<div style="border-radius: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 10px;">
Before this study, the input of this nitrogen to the global land system was unknown. The discovery could greatly improve climate change projections, which rely on understanding the carbon cycle. This newly identified source of nitrogen could also feed the carbon cycle on land, allowing ecosystems to pull more emissions out of the atmosphere, the authors said.</div>
<div style="border-radius: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 10px;">
"Our study shows that nitrogen weathering is a globally significant source of nutrition to soils and ecosystems worldwide," said co-lead author Ben Houlton, a professor in the UC Davis Department of Land, Air and Water Resources and director of the UC Davis Muir Institute. "This runs counter the centuries-long paradigm that has laid the foundation for the environmental sciences. We think that this nitrogen may allow forests and grasslands to sequester more fossil fuel CO<span style="border-radius: 0px !important; bottom: -0.25em; box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 10.5px; line-height: 0; position: relative; vertical-align: baseline;">2</span> emissions than previously thought."</div>
<div style="border-radius: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 10px;">
<strong style="border-radius: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box;">Weathering Is Key</strong></div>
<div style="border-radius: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 10px;">
Ecosystems need nitrogen and other nutrients to absorb carbon dioxide pollution, and there is a limited amount of it available from plants and soils. If a large amount of nitrogen comes from rocks, it helps explain how natural ecosystems like boreal forests are capable of taking up high levels of carbon dioxide.</div>
<div style="border-radius: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 10px;">
But not just any rock can leach nitrogen. Rock nitrogen availability is determined by weathering, which can be physical, such as through tectonic movement, or chemical, such as when minerals react with rainwater.</div>
<div style="border-radius: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 10px;">
That's primarily why rock nitrogen weathering varies across regions and landscapes. The study said that large areas of Africa are devoid of nitrogen-rich bedrock while northern latitudes have some of the highest levels of rock nitrogen weathering. Mountainous regions like the Himalayas and Andes are estimated to be significant sources of rock nitrogen weathering, similar to those regions' importance to global weathering rates and climate. Grasslands, tundra, deserts and woodlands also experience sizable rates of rock nitrogen weathering.</div>
<div style="border-radius: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 10px;">
<strong style="border-radius: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box;">Geology and Carbon Sequestration</strong></div>
<div style="border-radius: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 10px;">
Mapping nutrient profiles in rocks to their potential for carbon uptake could help drive conservation considerations. Areas with higher levels of rock nitrogen weathering may be able to sequester more carbon.</div>
<div style="border-radius: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 10px;">
"Geology might have a huge control over which systems can take up carbon dioxide and which ones don't," Houlton said. "When thinking about carbon sequestration, the geology of the planet can help guide our decisions about what we're conserving."</div>
<div style="border-radius: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 10px;">
<strong style="border-radius: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box;">Mysterious Gap</strong></div>
<div style="border-radius: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 10px;">
The work also elucidates the "case of the missing nitrogen." For decades, scientists have recognized that more nitrogen accumulates in soils and plants than can be explained by the atmosphere alone, but they could not pinpoint what was missing.</div>
<div style="border-radius: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 10px;">
"We show that the paradox of nitrogen is written in stone," said co-leading author Scott Morford, a UC Davis graduate student at the time of the study. "There's enough nitrogen in the rocks, and it breaks down fast enough to explain the cases where there has been this mysterious gap."</div>
<div style="border-radius: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 10px;">
In previous work, the research team analyzed samples of ancient rock collected from the Klamath Mountains of Northern California to find that the rocks and surrounding trees there held large amounts of nitrogen. With the current study, the authors built on that work, analyzing the planet's nitrogen balance, geochemical proxies and building a spatial nitrogen weathering model to assess rock nitrogen availability on a global scale.</div>
<div style="border-radius: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 10px;">
The researchers say the work does not hold immediate implications for farmers and gardeners, who greatly rely on nitrogen in natural and synthetic forms to grow food. Past work has indicated that some background nitrate in groundwater can be traced back to rock sources, but further research is needed to better understand how much.</div>
<div style="border-radius: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 10px;">
<strong style="border-radius: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box;">Rewriting Textbooks</strong></div>
<div style="border-radius: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 10px;">
"These results are going to require rewriting the textbooks," said Kendra McLauchlan, program director in the National Science Foundation's Division of Environmental Biology, which co-funded the research. "While there were hints that plants could use rock-derived nitrogen, this discovery shatters the paradigm that the ultimate source of available nitrogen is the atmosphere. Nitrogen is both the most important limiting nutrient on Earth and a dangerous pollutant, so it is important to understand the natural controls on its supply and demand. Humanity currently depends on atmospheric nitrogen to produce enough fertilizer to maintain world food supply. A discovery of this magnitude will open up a new era of research on this essential nutrient."</div>
<div style="border-radius: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 10px;">
UC Davis Professor Randy Dahlgren in the Department of Land, Air and Water Resources co-authored the study.</div>
<div style="border-radius: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 10px;">
The study was funded by the National Science Foundation's Division of Earth Sciences and its Division of Environmental Biology, as well as the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.</div>
