Nintendo Switch launch title The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild came away from the 2018 GDC Awards as Game of the Year, with Gorogoa and Cuphead the night's two other multiple award winners.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is the best game of the past year, according to voting members of the select International Choice Awards Network.
Presented on the evening of March 21 at the annual Game Developers Conference in San Francisco, California, 2018's edition bestowed Game of the Year as well as Best Design and Best Audio upon Nintendo's reinvention of the explorative open-world adventure.
Wordless visual puzzle story Gorogoa, released on Windows PC, Nintendo Switch and iOS in December 2017, won the Innovation Award as well as Best Mobile Game.
Action game Cuphead, whose design cues referenced vintage animated cartoons, was named best in Visual Art, while its developers at Studio MDHR won Best Debut.
Best Narrative went to the mesmeric, multi-part What Remains of Edith Finch; Best Technology was awarded to post-apocalyptic adventure among the robo-dinosaurs Horizon Zero Dawn; Best VR/AR Game was for Superhot VR to have and to hold (in movement-controlled bullet-time, of course); and a public online vote sent the Audience Award to polished, offbeat and occasionally head-spinning role-playing jaunt NieR: Automata
“Every year sees countless amazing games worthy of recognition, but this year in particular has seen some of the strongest titles to arrive this generation,” said the GDC's General Manager, Katie Stern.
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild helped us rediscover a childlike sense of adventure and discovery. Titles like Gorogoa and What Remains of Edith Finch offered us distinct creative visions that can only be experienced in games, and games like Cuphead and Horizon Zero Dawn crafted worlds we could lose ourselves in.”
Rami Ismail, a Dutch independent developer and the founder of small and influential studio Vlambeer (Ridiculous FishingNuclear Throne), received the ceremony's Ambassador Award for “[his] work helping incubators, local events, universities, community efforts, and games industry policy around the world.”
Tim Schafer, a game designer and studio founder known for his work on Day Of The TentacleFull ThrottleGrim Fandango and Brutal Legend, as well as for independent game development advocacy and independent crowdfunding efforts for Broken Age and Psychonauts 2 was recognized with the Lifetime Achievement Award.
