Visitor numbers at UK attractions rise 9% despite fewer overseas tourists

<p>Tate Modern becomes nation’s top attraction as experts say Britons are fuelling growth</p> <p>Visitor numbers at Britain’s museums, galleries, zoos, castles and country houses increased by nearly 9% last year despite a decrease in numbers of overseas tourists.</p> <p>Figures published on Wednesday show striking rises across the UK helped by stories as diverse as <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/culture/2015/jul/21/natural-history-museums-dippy-dinosaur-holiday">Dippy</a> the “150m-year-old dinosaur”, a regiment of 2,200-year-old <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/culture/2018/feb/06/terracotta-army-to-go-on-display-in-liverpool-china">terracotta warriors</a> and a one-year-old polar bear <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2018/jan/04/britain-polar-bear-cub-captivity-highland-wildlife-park">called Hamish</a>.</p> <p>The Highland Wildlife park in the Cairngorms had a 51.5% increase in visitor numbers to 205,930 due to Hamish, the first polar bear born in the UK for <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2018/jan/04/britain-polar-bear-cub-captivity-highland-wildlife-park">25 years</a>. He turned one in December and shares an enclosure with his mother, Victoria.</p> <p>Carlisle Castle experienced a 285% rise in visitor numbers to 177,247 in 2018. The main reason for the rise was the display of Paul Cummins and Tom Piper’s <a href="https://www.english-heritage.org.uk/visit/places/carlisle-castle/poppies-weeping-window-at-carlisle-castle/">Weeping Window</a> poppies sculpture, originally displayed at the Tower of London in 2014.</p> <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/culture/2019/mar/27/visitor-numbers-at-uk-attractions-rise-9-per-cent-despite-tourism-slump">Continue reading...</a><br /> <br /> from Top stories | The Guardian https://ift.tt/2OpfVGS<br />

Nasa cancels all-female spacewalk, citing lack of spacesuit in right size

<p>Space agency blames shortage of outerwear after first-of-its-kind mission falls through</p> <p>Nasa’s plans for the first all-female spacewalk have fallen through – at least in part because the agency doesn’t have enough spacesuits that fit the astronauts.</p> <p>What should have been a giant leap for womankind has turned into a stumble after Nasa said on Monday night that they will only have access to one correctly sized spacesuit top by Friday when the walk was scheduled. One of the two women on the mission, Anne McClain, will now have to give up her place to a male colleague.</p> <p><span>Related:</span> <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2019/feb/23/truth-world-built-for-men-car-crashes">The deadly truth about a world built for men – from stab vests to car crashes</a></p> <p lang="en" dir="ltr" xml:lang="en">Some more shots of the <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/spacewalk?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">#spacewalk</a> on Friday – was privileged to work with my friend and colleague <a href="https://twitter.com/NASA_Astronauts?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">@NASA_Astronauts</a> <a href="https://twitter.com/AstroHague?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">@AstroHague</a> <a href="https://t.co/KueUo7HXFm">pic.twitter.com/KueUo7HXFm</a></p> <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/science/2019/mar/25/nasa-all-female-spacewalk-canceled-women-spacesuits">Continue reading...</a><br /> <br /> from Top stories | The Guardian https://ift.tt/2Fz0KrM<br />
